The Ferns of Florida: A Reference and Field Guide
Published in Paperback by Pineapple Pr (April, 2000)
Author: Gil Nelson
Average review score:

Showcases some 163 kinds of ferns
Enhanced with more than two hundred color photographs, Gil Nelson's The Ferns Of Florida: A Reference And Field Guide showcases some 163 kinds of ferns ranging from norther species whose southern range extends into the uplands of Florida's norther tier, to tropical ferns spilling over Florida's southern tip. The text is thoroughly "reader friendly" with detailed descriptions and helpful identification tips, along with an invaluable selection of field observation based botanical keys for identifying plants in their wild ecosystems. There are extensive notes on each species growth form, as well as the botanical names, unique characteristics, garden use, and history. An essential and core title for any Floridian based gardener, as well as the professional and academic horticulturalist or botanist, The Ferns Of Florida also includes a glossary, a section on the fern life cycle and structure, a history of fern study in Florida, a discussion of some of the state's best natural ferneries, and an extensive bibliography for further study.

Ferns of Florida
This book is for anyone who has an interest in ferns and wishes to be able to distinguish one from the other. Great color pictures so that you can compare the subtle differences and make these ferns you own. Ferns are wonderful plants that require little care and are almost impossible to kill even with kindness. Enjoy.

What a fun cookbook!
I really have enjoyed using this cookbook...I especially like the ability to substitute different ingredients in each recipe to make it a bit different every time.

It's the cookbook for everyone!
I rated this book 5 stars because it is not snobbish nor is it only for the tres-chic cook. It's the cookbook for everyone! Very simple and easy to follow and the variations are amazing. Nothing was too salty or too sweet. The recipes were very well-tested because they were 'just right.' It takes boredom out of the usual repetitive meals. It's also a great gift idea! I gave it to a friend for a gift and she loves it too!

A General's Life
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (February, 1983)
Authors: Omar N. Bradley and Clair Blair
Average review score:

Essential 20th Century History AND a Darned Good Book
I was extremely surprized by this book. It is quite well-written and it tells a terrific story -- and though it is fully first-person, Omar Bradley comes across as a really fine guy. While he genuinely earned the rank, authority and privilege he ultimately exercised as a top US Army general, the story of his slow-but-steady rise through the hierarchy conveys the depth of personality he had achieved by the time he reached the upper ranks. A biography of George Marshall calls Bradley the "most effective troop leader ever produced by the US military system," and one can certainly see the validity in that appraisal by reading his autobiography. Bradley's honesty about other famous generals is interesting (though it is true he pretty much outlived all of them, and was able to have the final word) and appropriatedly honest/kind. Not far into the book, you wish you actually knew him, he seems the sort who would make a great friend.

Bradley's evaluations of several significant events make this book essential reading for students of 20th Century history. The perspective from which he witnessed everything was perfect for retrospective observation -- he wasn't so high up (like Churchill) that he had a global view, nor so low down that he could only see the trenches. And his micro-brief account of Anthony McAuliffe's "Nuts!" episode is just laugh-out-loud funny.

Omar Bradley
An outstanding autobiography of General Omar Bradley. Informative and homorous at times, but always entertaining. I found the work to have no slow areas, it held my attention throughout. Not only is it the story of Omar Bradley but it is also the story of the US Army for the first half of the twentieth century. Students of World War II history and the true military professional will enjoy this book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Good Discipline Good Kids

Authors: Gerald E. Nelson MD and Gerald Nelson
Average review score:

My God What can we do?
Parents across the country are reeling from the terror of two school shootings in less than three weeks. They are asking, "My God, what can we do?" Dr. Nelson, in Good Discipline, Good Kids, has the answer. The children who have been pushed to the breaking point of this kind of violence share a common profile. They show signs of isolation, being bullied or treated as an outsider by their peers, anger or rage, fear or terror of being abandoned and unable to feel the feelings of others.

In this quick-read simple guide to good discipline, Dr. Nelson offers a one minute, yes - one minute process in which parents are empowered to connect with their kids, impart family values, instill a conscience in their children, respond to their misbehavior and affirm their good behavior, teach them how to feel other people's feelings, deepen the child's respect and affection for the parent, lessen the child's fear of abandonment and lay a solid foundation for good relationships for the rest of their lives. If you love your kids, get this book!

It works on 8 year olds!
My daughter really has blossomed from being an easy child already into being a dream child as a result of being exposed to Dr. Nelson's amazingly practical, helpful and wise ideas. I have given copies of this book to several friends, and everyone I know who has seen it has been highly complimentary. It's a must have for parents who want to combine heart with excellent behavior in a gentle, effective way. If only it could work with dogs! Good work, Dr. Nelson

Harlem Gallery and Other Poems of Melvin B. Tolson
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Virginia (October, 1999)
Authors: Melvin Beaunorus Tolson, Raymond Nelson, and Rita Dove
Average review score:

A superb anthology of an outstanding Black poet.
Raymond Nelson edits Harlem Gallery And Other Poems Of Melvin B. Tolson (1865-0), which presents works from one of the most recognized black voices in American poetry. His poems are here organized by topic and include notes for further study.

The Melvin B. Tolosian Review
Melvin B. Tolson was recognized as one of the first African American poets whose poetry has been classified as being in the esoteric category. The implication of this statement means that Tolson was writing poetry in a format which would be acceptable by the greatest English and American poets. One of them who recognized Tolson was W.H. Auden, who wrote favorable reviews about Tolson's poetry. Tolson, who came after the last years of the Harlem Renissance era, knew many of the prominent writers and poets of that era, which lasted from the 1920s through the 1930s. He knew many of the well known writers and poets of that period, including Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Zora Hurston, V.F. Cavington, Ralph Ellison, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Gwendolyn Brooks, Margaret Walker, W.E.B. Dubios, James Weldon Johnson and Charles S. Johnson. While he was at Wiley College, Marshall, Texas, Tolson established his reputation by publishing his first book of poems entitled, Rendezvous with America, in 1944. For years prior to that date, Tolson taught English classes to thousands of students since his arrival there from Lincoln University, Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1923. Also he was the coach of the famous Wiley College Debate Team, which included, James Farmer, who later became the founder of the CORE Civil Rights Organization.
